Wii're Problematic

I own a Wii. I love my Wii. But I have a problem. I am purposefully not finishing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I am not doing this because it is too hard, or too long, or too disappointing a game, no I am doing this because I don't have anything to play when I'm done.

The Wii is suffering from a relatively familiar problem in the games industry, the first 6 month drought. Because of a number of factors about getting games published, most new consoles ship with one, maybe two, games that are actually worth playing. And no, Happy Feet ain't one of them. I'll possibly find time in the near future to finish up the newest adventure of Link and Zelda, but really I just wish console makers would be more on top of this problem so that during every new console launch we're not sitting around waiting for the next good game.

Super Paper Mario gets released on April 9, and Smash Brothers Brawl comes out this summer. But please Nintendo, get on your ball. Get some quality games out there soon.

Some thoughts on Wii:

- Nintendo has made it clear in their public relations over the last few years that the future of gaming (in Nintendo's eyes, at least) is all about making product that is accessible to everyone. That means providing experiences that the most hardcore, devoted gamers will crave (Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3 & SSB Brawl among the most notable), and also games that have a more casual appeal, such as WarioWare and Mario Party. Has Nintendo made good on this promise? Thus far it has, to an extent (if Cooking Mama peeks your fancy, that is). It's still just a 4 month-old system. Give Nintendo some credit for gaining your trust after it's abyssmal Gamecube showing.

- As you've said, Wii is suffering from a new system drought, as do all new consoles. Arguably, Sony is in a much worse position right now. It can't be avoided, however. No matter how long the video game industry has been around, the business model has not and will not change: developers want to know that they're going to make money before they make the investment in a new console. Sure, there's some serious crap out right now, but most of it is meant to test the waters. If (or rather, WHEN) the new hardware proves true, then we'll see the A-list material roll out.

- Fun Fact: The sensor strip you place below the TV screen is simply two infrared dots at opposite ends of the strip. Should you smash your Wii-mote into it during a frenzied Wii Sports bout (why you're letting go of the remote at all is the real question), light up two candles and set them at either end of the TV. Re-calibrate and you're back in the game.
